Sweat, broken glass, and bodies plowing into dusted drum sets – this is a scene that unfurled many times over at the now defunct McAllen VFW post whenever GALLOWS HOLIER THAN THE CROSS powered through a set. No stages, no masters, just pummeling tube guitar amps purged beyond their means and bare chested vocalists gashing their vocal chords. It was screamo, it was punk, it was violent, but between the songs and after the set it was always humbling and warm. Scenes like this remain power chord hammered into the minds of many a youth fortunate enough to thrash around to GHTTC during the 2004 – 2007 era of the South Texas music scene.
It’s the stuff that made the band legends amidst the underground screamo community, and up until recently it would cripple my heart with the quiet bane of nostalgia that the youth of today would not have the opp to ever experience such an enormous band. Well, shit, turns out that through some rift in the cosmos the band is going to get back together for one night only –
February 5, 2015 at Space 16th – a tiny concrete all age space that is very likely going to be literally packed to the ceilings. Really, people will be crowd surfing into oblivion, so be prepared if you plan to attend!
