Hello my little jewels of the South Texas delta. It is with great pleasure to bring in the 2015 show calendar with a swift and dirty punch to the gut. Announcing: KING TUFF (Sub Pop) and EX HEX – going down Monday, January 12, 2015 at Cine El Rey! Regional support comes from indie-punks PINKY SWEAR and folk pop upstart, ANDY BOEM. Please keep reading for more info on these artists + show aka why this show is so great aka why Ex Hex and Mary Timony are hella important.
KING TUFF is the alias of Kyle Thomas. The man is a seasoned and charismatic work horse within the contemporary garage rock movement. This translates into his music as the denim and pleather clad King Tuff, with two solid records on Sub Pop that shuffle and thrash with the aesthetics of 70s power-pop and melodic garage punk. Before Thomas began releasing music as Tuff (and before Tuff’s music was picked up for releases on Burger Records and Sub Pop), Thomas shared song writing duties in Witch, a stoner-metal outfit featuring J. Mascis, and Feathers, the late great freak folk act. The man is a living legend. Jam King Tuff below:
EX HEX is a Washington D.C. based garage pop trio led by Mary Timony, Betsy Wright, and Laura Harris. Although young as a band (formed -fully, last year), their dynamic resonates with that of experienced greats and their music bursts with smart, pummeling guitar riffs and sharp lyrics. This is in large part due to the genius of band leader Mary Timony, who IS A LEGEND. Seriously. Before Ex Hex came to a fruition as a touring entity, Timony was regarded for her 90s underground punk lineage in Autoclave and Helium, and later exalted into a more mainstream realm with her place in the short lived but highly profiled bi-coastal punk act, Wild Flag, which featured Sleater Kinney members Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss. Aside from Timony’s own major rock and roll resume, though, EX HEX really is it’s own rock, and a god damn solid and great band it is. Take a listen to Ex Hex’s aptly titled album debut, RIPS, below:
