One stares into the dusted emerald pink of the cosmos. Maybe it’s through a laminated cut out on a classroom wall, or through a jpeg of the universe glowing between gifs on tumblr. But there it is – our reality in past and present, and our on going metaphor. It’s there, between the bodies of light and color. The darkness that reminds one that, even in the shadows of the unknown, there is a further.
Shabazz Palaces is there- within the unknown consciousness of hip-hop – they are a vessel of rose-quartz filtered soul and futurist soundscapes, guided by the Grammy award winning artist, Ismael Butler. Traversing, conscious – This is Shabazz Palaces, and it is with humbling honor to announce a special performance with this group, happening Wednesday, September 17th at the Historic Cine El Rey. Details below:
Based out of Seattle, Ishmael Butler has been exploring the deeper realms of hip-hop since 2009, and, upon each new album, has continued to reach the cusp of its cliff, only to stand up and stare into new realms of the unexplored, creative abyss within music and art.
This knack of Butler’s – one of being a bit ahead, but always aware of the space he came from – arguably developed during his experience as a young mastermind for Diggable Planets, a trio of artists that included Butler and went on to win a Grammy for their fusion of jazz sampling and poetic prose in the early 90s.
Diggable Planets has since slowed its axis on the artist circuit, but Butler’s visions have not, as he has since entered a new realm with Shabazz Palaces since 2009. As before, Butler’s work has continued to be prolific and well received, with the project’s experimental sounds having garnered critical praise from the guns at Complex, Pitchfork, and also landing a signing to Sub-Pop. Again, it’s a huge treat to host this. Here are the details:
